CV for Remote Work (1 page, read in 30 seconds)
Structure that passes screening
Header (name, city plus timezone, portfolio/GitHub/LinkedIn links) > 2-line summary (target role plus strongest proof) > Experience (3-4 bullets per role: verb plus number plus impact) > Skills (tools from the listing) > short Education. One page under 8 years of experience.
Strong vs weak bullet examples
Weak: responsible for company data. Strong: cleaned a 40k-row order dataset (SQL plus Sheets), built a weekly dashboard, cut reporting from 2 days to 3 hours. Pattern: context, action, number, impact.
Remote signals screeners want
Async writing (docs, Loom, Notion), ownership without supervision, explicit timezone overlap, and shipped proof (live links, not task lists). State timezone in the header.
Most common disqualifiers
3 pages with no numbers, 30-item skill lists with no proof, no portfolio link, one generic CV for every role. One target role equals one CV version.
Pre-send checklist
Numbers in every experience? Skills match listing keywords? Portfolio opens without login? PDF named Name-Role.pdf? One page max?
30-Day Plan: Zero to First Proof
Week 1 - pick one path
Pick 1 role plus 1 platform plus 1 skill. Example: QA Engineer plus Remote OK plus test planning. Week 1 output: a one-page positioning line.
Week 2 - do 2 library tasks
Take 2 beginner tasks. Save outputs as portfolio drafts. Get feedback from 1 person.
Week 3 - publish proof
Tidy 1 case study with the portfolio template. Publish as public Notion, GitHub, or PDF. Link it from CV and LinkedIn.
Week 4 - apply to 10 fitting jobs
10 curated applications beat 100 mass ones. Log everything in the Job Tracker with a clear next action.
Remote Interview Question Bank plus How to Answer
Tell me about yourself (2 minutes)
Formula: current position, 2 relevant proofs with numbers, why this role. Keep it under 2 minutes and end with enthusiasm for the role.
How do you work async?
Answer with a system, not a trait: 5-line daily updates, decisions in docs, Loom for visual context. Point to a sample doc in your portfolio.
Tell me about a conflict or missed deadline
Short STAR: situation, task, action focused on what you did, result with numbers plus the system preventing repeats. Never blame a former team.
Questions to ask back
Success in the first 90 days? Timezone overlap handling? How work gets reviewed? Contract type and payment? These also check red flags.
Freelance Pitch Proposal (copy-paste template)
5-paragraph template
1) One sentence on the client problem. 2) 3-5-step plan plus timeline. 3) Relevant proof (1 link plus 1 number). 4) Scope and price. 5) Call to action. Under 200 words.
Bad vs good opener
Bad: hard worker and fast learner. Good: you need a checkout test plan before launch - 30 test cases plus critical-bug video in 5 days, as done for shop X with escaped bugs down 40 percent.
Sane starting prices
First project: small fixed price to lower client risk. State max 2 revisions and out-of-scope. Raise rates after 2-3 testimonials.
Remote Salaries: US / UK / Australia Ranges plus Negotiation
Rough ranges (junior-mid, remote, 2025-2026)
Frontend/Data/QA/PM junior-mid: US -120k, UK 30-60k pounds, Australia A-110k. Contractor rates run 20-40 percent higher nominally. NGO pays 20-30 percent below commercial tech. Check fresh listings.
Contractor vs employee
Employee: salary plus benefits. Contractor: higher rate but own taxes, insurance, leave. Ask about platform fees, currency, net or gross, and payment terms.
Polite negotiation script
Thank them, cite scope and market data, ask for room toward your number, offer flexibility on start date plus a 2-week trial. Numbers plus reasons, not feelings.
Timezone and Contracts: Checklist Before Applying
Realistic overlap from GMT+7
UK: 6-7 hours apart, evening overlap works. US East: 11-12 hours, async-first only. US West: 14-15 hours, ask explicitly. Australia: 3 hours, most comfortable.
5 things every job post must have
Country eligibility, overlap hours, contract type, salary range, hiring process. If missing, ask in the first message.
Red flags
Unpaid trials over 1-2 hours, no company name, training-fee requests, text-chat-only interviews, far-above-market rates with no selection. Decline politely.
Rate Cards and Pricing: Price Without Guessing
Why hourly hurts you
Hourly punishes the fast. Clients pay for outcomes, not sitting time. Use hourly only for maintenance and undefined tasks. For projects: value-based fixed price. Example: a 5-million audit preventing 50 million in monthly losses is cheap, not expensive.
The 3-layer formula
Layer 1: floor rate (living costs plus taxes plus 30 percent buffer over realistic hours). Layer 2: market rate (check 10 peers on Contra/Upwork). Layer 3: value rate (10-20 percent of value created). Final price: the highest of the three. Never below floor.
Anatomy of an accepted proposal
3 package options (basic, recommended, premium) with the recommended one most profitable for you. Each: concrete deliverables, timeline, max 2 revisions, 50/50 terms. Options make clients pick a package, not yes or no.
Raising rates script
To old clients: my rate rises 20 percent next month as scope grew X with results Y. Clients leaving over that were never ideal. Seven years of experience: keepers value outcomes, not the hardest bargainers.
Async Handbook: Systems Without Meeting Overload
Async-by-default rules
Written is default, meetings are exceptions. Meeting requirements: written agenda, a decision to make, max 25 minutes. Without all three, decline politely and ask for a 5-minute Loom instead.
A trusted daily rhythm
5-line daily update (yesterday, today, blockers, needs from whom). Friday demo every week however small. Monthly 1-pager: done, learned, next. People with tidy updates are never suspected of slacking.
Documentation that gets read
Unwritten decisions never happened. Format: 2-sentence context, options considered, decision, review date. One searchable place. If finding takes over 1 minute, your system failed.
Loom replaces 70 percent of meetings
Demos, design feedback, bug explanations: record 5 minutes with narration. Recipients watch at 1.5x anytime. Always include a 3-line text summary with timestamps. This one skill raises your value on any remote team.
90-Day Plan: Winning the First 3 Months Remote
Days 1-30: understand and document
No big change proposals yet. Map stakeholders, docs, decision-making, team metrics. Write your 10 best questions. Output: 1-page team map plus 3 small visible quick wins.
Days 31-60: ship first proof
Finish 1 visible end-to-end project. Over-communicate beyond asked. Request explicit day-45 feedback: stop, start, continue. Corrections now are cheap; at month 6 they are expensive.
Days 61-90: own something
Take over 1 area: be the person for it. Write its SOP, measure its baseline, propose 1 data-backed improvement. At the 90-day review, arrive with numbers of what changed.
Remote probation traps
Disappearing (2 silent days reads as a problem), waiting to be told (remote rewards documented initiative), festering async conflict (text misunderstandings rot fast - resolve via a 15-minute call).
Scam Detector: 12 Red Flags in Postings and Clients
Posting red flags
Far-above-market pay with no selection, vague descriptions with no company name, training-fee or equipment-purchase requests, text-chat-only interviews, free email domains for supposedly big companies. One is enough to walk away.
Freelance client red flags
Unpaid trials over 1 hour, refusal of terms or written contracts, pre-start scope creep, late-night false-urgency messages, a history of rotating freelancers monthly. Check reviews and ask references.
Paid vs free tests
Fair skill tests run 1-2 hours max and stay generic, never the client actual work. If the test is their real job (design our homepage, audit our account), ask for pay or decline. Your portfolio should already answer 80 percent of doubts.
If already hit
Stop work immediately, save all chat and file evidence, report to the platform, warn communities so others avoid it. Never chase money with more free work. The lesson: contract and terms upfront, no exceptions.
15 Copy-Paste Scripts: DMs, Follow-ups, Pitches, Negotiation
Cold DM to a hiring manager (LinkedIn)
Hi [Name], I saw [Company] opened a [Role] role. I [1-number proof]. May I send a 1-page summary of how I would solve [their problem]? A 2-minute read. Thanks, [Name]. Rules: max 80 words, 1 number, 1 small ask. No CV in the first DM.
Polite but pressing day-7 follow-up
Hi [Name], following up on my [Role] application last week. Meanwhile I made [a 1-page mini audit for their company]. Link: [URL]. If timing is off, may I follow up next month? Trick: every follow-up brings something new, never just checking in.
200-word freelance pitch (full example)
Hi, I read the brief about a 70-percent checkout abandonment. My plan: (1) audit 30 test cases in 3 days, (2) fix 5 critical bugs in 5 days, (3) regression reports each release. Proof: shop X cut escaped bugs 40 percent in a month (link). Fixed 7 million, 50 percent upfront, 2 revisions. Free for a 15-minute call Thursday 10 or 14? This wins by being specific: their numbers, your plan, your proof, your price, your ask.
Answering unpaid-work-as-test requests
Thanks for the trust. A generic 1-2-hour test I do free. For this scope (auditing your real account), I offer a paid trial of 2 million deducted from the project fee if we continue. Otherwise I can show a similar past audit. This sentence saves hundreds of unpaid hours.
Raising rates with old clients
Hi [Name], from next month my rate rises from 5 to 6 million monthly. Reason: scope grew (name 2 things) with results (name 1 number). As appreciation, the old rate holds for a 1-month transition. Thanks for the collaboration. No apologies, no over-explaining. Leavers were never ideal clients.
Indonesia Rate Card 2026: Honest Numbers per Role
Full-time remote (monthly, IDR)
VA/EA: 5-9 million (junior) 9-15 million (mid). Support: 5-8, 8-12. Social: 5-8, 8-14. SEO: 7-12, 12-22. Copywriter: 6-10, 10-20. Video: 5-9, 9-16. QA: 8-14, 14-25. Data: 9-15, 15-28. Frontend: 10-18, 18-35. PM: 12-20, 20-35. Foreign (US/EU) clients usually pay 1.5-2.5x for the same level.
Per-project freelance (starting from)
Checkout QA audit: 5-8 million. 20-keyword map: 2-3.5 million. Hero rewrite: 1.5-3 million. 60-second video: 300-800 thousand. 1-process SOP: 2-4 million. Weekly dashboard: 4-7 million. Welcome flow: 3-5 million. Raise 20-30 percent every 3 new testimonials until the market refuses, then stop.
How to read these numbers
Junior means 0-1 years of proof. Mid means 2-4 years plus portfolio. Below floor means subsidizing the client. Above market needs above-market proof. Update every 6 months: ask 3 peers their rates. Open secret: nobody knows your market rate unless you ask.
3 Portfolio Teardowns: Before vs After
Case 1: numberless CV to shortlist
Before: responsible for weekly data reports. After: cleaned a 40k-row order dataset, automated weekly dashboard, reporting time from 2 days to 3 hours. Difference: numbers, active verbs, business impact. Recruiters do not care about duties; they care about consequences.
Case 2: 5-page case study to 1 page
Before: 5 pages of theory plus context-free screenshots. After: 1 page with a 2-sentence problem, 4-step method, 1 results table, 2 reflection sentences. Bitter insight: hiring managers read 3 minutes. Needing 15 means failure however good the work.
Case 3: generic pitch to specific
Before: hi, hard worker and fast learner, 2 years experience, competitive rate. After: a 70-percent abandonment usually leaks at these 3 points (named). I audit 30 cases in 3 days, fix criticals in 5, e.g. shop X down 40 percent (link). Fixed 7 million. Lesson: never talk about yourself; talk about their problem, specifically.
